HP, as known as haptoglobin, is processed to yield both alpha and beta chains, which subsequently combine as a tetramer to produce haptoglobin. In blood plasma, haptoglobin binds free hemoglobin (Hb) released from erythrocytes with high affinity and thereby inhibits its oxidative activity.
